Deidre Carr launched her teaching career at Freeport High School where she served for twenty years, including seven years as chair of the English department. At Freeport, she initiated and implemented the Advanced Placement English program as well senior electives in journalism and creative writing. Carr's classroom experience includes teaching American Literature, British Literature, and Modern Literature. She founded The Outlet, the Freeport High School online student newspaper and co-founded The Clarion, the school's literary magazine.
Since 1999, Carr directed the Freeport High School Writing Center where she coached writing for students in grades 9-12. In the Writing Center she worked with students of all abilities on writing assignments from all disciplines in the prewriting, writing, and revision process. Carr also worked with teachers to develop and implement writing assignments for the classroom. In addition, she directed Senior Projects, an annual independent study project for seniors.
Carr serves as a national reader and scorer for the Advance Placement Exam in English Language and Composition. She is a Maine Writing Fellow, a division of the National Writing Project. Carr worked on the development of the Maine Educational Assessment Exam and trained other teachers to score and evaluate the exam. She assisted in the development of writing prompts for the Casco Bay Alliance for Education where she also trained teachers and scored exams. Carr received a SEED developer's grant from the Maine Center for Education in recognition of teaching excellence and innovation. An active writer, she has published short stories and professional articles including Maine Day, Things Italian, and Senior Project Guidelines. Her story Maine Day was an English Journal fiction competition winner and was broadcast at Maine Public Radio's first annual "Maine Reads" event.
Carr earned her bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and master’s degree at Case Western Reserve University. She completed graduate study in education and writing with honors at the University of Southern Maine and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.
